What is a Solar Whiz Whirlybird?
The Solar Whiz whirlybird is a powerful roof ventilation and exhaust fan that operates completely without mains electricity. It is the ideal solar exhaust fan for roof ventilation and home cooling in summer and great for reducing moisture levels and condensation in the roof space in winter.
Solar Powered or Mains Powered?
Solar Powered Solar Whiz whirlybirds provide the simplest operation (they run whenever the sun is out). The initial purchase cost is higher, but they are simpler to install and have no ongoing running costs. Their speed may reduce on cloudy days and they will not run at night. They have a solar panel on top of the fan housing.
It is possible to add mains power to a solar powered whirlybird (for night time operation). A Constant Current Module is installed together with a Thermostat and a 24V Power Pack. This solution offers the best of both worlds. The Solar Whiz whirlybird will utilise all available solar power and top up any deficiencies using mains power. Their speed will not reduce on cloudy days and they can run at night. They have a solar panel on top of the fan housing.
Mains Powered Solar Whiz whirlybirds provide day long operation, regardless of whether it is sunny. The initial purchase cost is lower, but they require an electrician (or an existing power point in the roof) to install and have very low ongoing running costs. Their speed will not reduce on cloudy days and they can run at night. They do not have a solar panel on top of the fan housing.
Residential Sizing
All residential Solar Whiz whirlybirds require a 300mm roof penetration. The dimensions of the fan housing are the same for each model (but the higher capacity models have larger solar panels).
- SW-AU-R-15: moves 1,200 m³ of air per hour. This will provide enough ventilation for a standard pitched home up to around 120 square meters. It consumes 15 watts when running and produces less than 40dbA noise.
- SW-AU-R-28: moves 1,700 m³ of air per hour. This will provide enough ventilation for a standard pitched home up to around 180 square meters. It consumes 28 watts when running and produces less than 45dbA noise.
- SW-AU-R-40: moves 2,300 m³ of air per hour. This will provide enough ventilation for a standard pitched home up to around 250 square meters. It consumes 40 watts when running and produces less than 60dbA noise.
Accessories
Thermostats
- Fixed Thermostat: prevent heat loss during winter. The fixed thermostat is installed in the roof space and pre-set at 25°C. The Solar Whiz will not run unless the roof space is above 25°C.
- Adjustable Thermostat: prevent heat loss during winter. The adjustable thermostat is usually installed in the roof space, but can be installed on a wall inside your home. It has an on/off switch and is settable from 10°C to 30°C. The Solar Whiz will not run unless the roof space is above your set temperature.
Night Operation
- Solar powered models: these models require a Constant Current Module, a Thermostat and a 24V Power Pack. The 'Night Operation' selection when ordering includes all necessary components.
- Mains powered models: these models already include a 24V Power Pack. This allows 24/7 operation out of the box. A thermostat is recommended so that your Solar Whiz can switch off automatically when not needed.
Bush Fire Rated Eave Vents
-
Maximise the efficiency of your Solar Whiz whirlybird by allowing replacement air to freely enter the roof space. Bush fire rated eave vents are unobtrusive and easy to install. They are covered in white powder coating.
-
We recommend four to eight eave vents per Solar Whiz whirlybird for maximum roof space ventilation.
